KARACHI:

Experts have urged the business community to play its part in promoting use of plastic bags made from oxo-biodegradable additive which is capable of disposing of bags after their set life.

In a seminar held recently at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), experts said that with the help of new technology, jobs of local workers could be saved without shutting down the existing plastic bag factories.

Having introduced oxo-biodegradable additive, the trade and industry can not only control plastic pollution caused by shopping and packaging bags but also comply with the requirements of environmentally-friendly packaging for the international market, said FPCCI President Haji Ghulam Ali.

The technology is very simple and needs no changes in the existing manufacturing methods but just requires adding one per cent of additive in the same raw material as for normal plastic.

Imran Rehman | 13 years ago | Reply I would like to request the government to exempt custom duty and allow Oxo-biodegradable bags to be produced in 15-17 microns instead of 30 microns which can help the companies to buy eco-friendly bags in much cheaper price, this way will encourge the use of environment friendly bags in a low cost way. We all can take benifits in terms of price and low use of heavy duty bags which ultimately effect the cost of product. Clean, Green & Pollution Free Pakistan is what we all should be looking after in the days to come!
