ISLAMABAD:

President Asif Ali Zardari has called for setting up a committee comprising federal ministers for privatisation, finance, petroleum, water and power and representatives of private sector to finalise proposals for the privatisation of state-run enterprises within four weeks.

This he said during a meeting with a delegation of the Pakistan Business Council (PBC) at the President’s House on Monday. The meeting was held in connection with seeking input and full participation of businessmen in overcoming economic challenges and better economic management.

The president said that for sustained economic development and recovery the government and businesses must continue to partner in formulation and implementation of economic policies which would create more business opportunities and ensure continuity of policies.

He underscored the need for business communities to step forward and create consensus on overcoming economic challenges.

Praising the role of businessmen, the president said any meaningful economic development was not possible without their enterprise, cooperation and sincere input.

He said law and order and energy crisis were the biggest challenges and the government was trying its best to address these issues. “Various reforms were being introduced to put the economy on a sustainable path of progress,” he said.

PBC representatives gave a presentation with focus on restructuring of state-owned enterprises, the energy sector and equity market.
