PESHAWAR: Politicians, social activists and people from different spheres of life gathered on Friday paid tribute to former human rights and peace activist Idrees Kamal at the Peshawar Press Club to mark his fifth death anniversary. Kamal had died of a brain haemorrhage on June 10, 2013, in Quetta where he was attending a conference. He was the founding member and convener of Amn Tehreek, a conglomeration of civil society organisations of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) working for peace and defending human rights. During his life, he had stressed all political forces to condemn all forms of terrorism and violence and to stand united to achieve stability in the region. “He was one of the most progressive voices who worked for peace and ensuring basic rights to the people of K-P,” recounted Professor Dr Sarfaraz Khan, head of the Area Study Center at the University of Peshawar. “Kamal was also an active student at the university and had continued his struggle for the deprived people throughout his life,” he said.
