KARACHI: The Kashmir conflict is one of the deadliest disputes the world has ever witnessed. Indo-Pak tensions are especially dangerous because they bring two nuclear states on the brink of war. Both India and Pakistan need to engage in bilateral talks on all critical issues. Continuing tensions over Kashmir will weaken any initiative to bring stability to South Asia as well as escalate the risk of a war in the region. It would be quite right to assume that Kashmir is the root cause of much of the militancy in South Asia.
It is necessary for the international community to realise that peace and stability in South Asia can only be guaranteed if the disputes between Pakistan and India, including the Kashmir dispute, are resolved, as Pakistan has become a frontline state in the global war on terrorism.
More than 70,000 Indian troops in Jammu and Kashmir have been held accountable for mass extra-judicial killings, torture, rape, sexual abuse of innumerable Kashmiris. They have been implicated for enforced disappearance of thousands of Kashmiris. The resolution of the Kashmir issue lies in granting the right to self-determination to the Kashmiris.
