Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth takes oath as PHC CJ

He replaces Justice Yahya Afridi who has been elevated to the Supreme Court

PESHAWAR: Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth on Thursday took oath as the 24th Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra administered the oath to the 57-year-old judge in a ceremony at the Governor House. Senior lawyers, elected representatives of Peshawar High Court Bar Association and judges of PHC attended the oath-taking ceremony.

PHC’s Justice Afridi elevated to top court

Justice Seth had been appointed as the chief of the PHC after outgoing chief justice, Justice Yahya Afridi, was elevated to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The incoming PHC chief justice may work in the post till March 15, 2023.

The federal Law Ministry had on Monday issued a notification notifying Justice Seth’s elevation as the chief of PHC.

Under the law, the chief justice of a high court is appointed by the country’s president on the recommendations of the Judicial Commission.

The commission recommended the elevation of PHC Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to the Supreme Court on June 3 and nominated Justice Seth as his successor.

Born on March 16, 1961 in Dera Ismail Khan, Justice Seth was elevated to the high court as an additional judge on August 2, 2011.

Known for keeping a low profile, Justice Seth is well respected in the legal fraternity of the country.

During his service in the PHC, Justice Seth has served as a banking judge and company judge.

He has also remained a member of the Subordinate Judiciary Service Tribunal of Peshawar.

Regulating private schools: K-P fails to craft policy

Justice Seth has practised law and was considered to be one of the leading lawyers in cases pertaining to services and labour before he crossed over to become a judge.

Justice Seth was enrolled as an advocate of the lower courts in December 1985, elevated to become the advocate of a high court on March 22, 1990. Subsequently, he enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2008.

Justice Seth has an LLB from Khyber Law College, having graduated in 1985.
