Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth takes oath as PHC chief justice

Justice Seth is the 24th Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court

Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth on Thursday took an oath as Peshawar High Court’s 24th chief justice.

Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Iqbal Zafar Jhagra administered the oath to the 57-year-old judge in a ceremony held at the Governor House.

Senior lawyers, elected representatives of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association and judges of PHC attended the oath-taking ceremony.

The seat fell vacant after former chief justice of PHC Justice Yahya Afridi was elevated to a Supreme Court judge.



Justice Seth may serve as the PHC chief justice till March 15, 2023.

Ministry of Law and Justice issued the notification of his elevation as the high court chief justice last week. According to the law, appointment of the chief justice of high court is made by the president on the recommendation of the judicial commission.

The commission has recommended the elevation of PHC Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to the Supreme Court on June 3 and nominated Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth as his successor as the top judge of the PHC.

Born on March 16, 1961, in Dera Ismail Khan, Justice Seth was elevated to the high court as Additional Judge on August 2, 2011. Known for keeping a low profile, Seth is well respected in the legal fraternity of the country.



His profile on PHC website relays that he remained as a Banking and Company Judge of the Peshawar High Court. He even remained a member of the Subordinate Judiciary Service Tribunal, Peshawar.

Justice Seth has practiced law and was considered as one of a leading lawyer in cases pertaining to services and labour. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the Lower Courts on December 1985 and elevated to the High Court on March 22, 1990, and subsequently as Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2008.

Justice Seth did his LLB from Khyber Law College, Peshawar in 1985.
