Students of University of Bristol collected £1,500 to gift a week-long trip to the varisty’s cleaner and his wife to visit their family in Jamaica.

The students crowdfunded the money in hopes to send Herman Gordan and his wife to Jamaica.

"He is the epitome of happiness," says the JustGiving page where over 230 supporters donated money.

Later a video was shared online showing Herman being surprised with the money and then breaking down in tears.

The gifted money was given to him along with the note addressed from "Bristol Students", thanking him for his "positive energy" over the years.

"You have brightened many of our days and we want you to know that we love and appreciate you."

Herman has been employed by the university as part of the cleaning staff for the past 12 years.

Herman told Newsbeat that is important to keep away "negative vibes", an attitude that so many students praise him for.

"I know that these students are studying. You don't want any negative vibes around them."

"They speak good things to me, I speak good things to them, and I bless them all."

The idea of Herman's trip to Jamaica came from a Facebook post, according to an admin from the Bristruths Facebook page (an anonymous ‘truth’ page for Bristol University).

"It all started with this post on May 19," they told Newsbeat.

The initial post called Herman "the jolliest man I have ever met" and said "if you wanna reason to smile, go talk to him for a min or two".

The following day a 20-year-old medicine student at Bristol, Hadi al Zubaidi, anonymously posted that he was starting a crowdfunding page for him.

The target set was almost reached within five days.

"It just went crazy," Hadi told Newsbeat. "I myself was shocked that he was this famous!"

Hadi had been speaking to Herman several times before he decided "he deserved more than just conversations".

"He spends the whole time being nice to everybody, it's about time we were nice to him."

Upon receiving the money for his trip, Herman was overcome with emotions.

He'd never mentioned anything about wanting to go away, so receiving the money was a complete shock.

"I don't know if you know that song - 'Many a tear has to fall/But it's all in the game'," he said.

"That's what happened. A lot of tears."
