What we expect from caretakers

Letter June 28, 2018
Earlier, caretaker administrations in Punjab and then KP announced the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2018-19

LAHORE: Earlier, caretaker administrations in Punjab and then Khyber-Paktunkhwa announced the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2018-19. As previously the out-going governments have been questioned for presenting budgets for the year they’ll no longer be in office. In Pakistan caretakers governments are often accused of protecting a political party or making the most of the four months to serve the interests of government officials.

Recently, Punjab’s caretaker government has approved a 10 per cent increase in the salaries of the government employees. With already heavy government machinery functioning that grapples with high budget deficits and cost of its set-up, such a rise is less than understandable.

In the time period given, the caretaker setup should not do what the government before was barred from doing but rather pave the way forward for smooth functioning for the government to come.
