Fatwa — will it be effective?

Letter June 24, 2018
It is important for the masses to be made aware of the religious teachings on matters of the common good

LAHORE: After a parliamentary committee proposed that the government issue a fatwa against power theft, it seems like issuance of an edict is the latest tactic employed by the government to instill fear among deadbeat subscribers. Can they succeed is the question on everybody’s lips. Earlier religious decrees were sanctioned against terrorism and now it is power theft. One would not be surprised if sooner than later the government sought fatwas from clerics on other issues that surround the country and make the case for its poor pace of development.

It is important for the masses to be made aware of the religious teachings on matters of the common good like water conservation, food wastage or even power theft, the government should employ other methods to deal with the problem at hand. As a matter of fact, a monetary fine or a surcharge would induce more fear and possibly trigger quicker results than ineffective religious teachings to stop people from committing wrong deeds.
