Politics as profession

Perhaps this is why politicians are seen bent on being a launch pad for the political career of their off-spring

MULTAN: Thanks to the election nomination paper scrutiny exercise that makes Pakistani politicians disclose their possessions, wealth and assets. Looking at the details disclosed in these papers, enlisting many having possessions worth billions in gold, lands, cattle and property in Pakistan and abroad, one is left to think how these public representatives manage to build such vast empires while serving the masses as ‘public servants’.

Perhaps it is one of these reasons that politicians are seen bent on being a launch pad for the political career of their off-spring, well explained by Pakistan’s hereditary politics, where not individuals but families rule for decades and hoard wealth.

However, there should be a mechanism to bar anyone owning more than a certain amount of wealth from holding a public office and there should not be any law that would covertly protect the people’s representatives minting money while in office.
