Eid bloodshed

Letter June 19, 2018
US has not been able to play a decisive role in ensuring peace between the government and the Taliban

QUETTA: The Afghans did not have a moment of respite even during Eid and despite the much-lauded ceasefire between government forces and the Taliban 20 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack on the second day of Eid. Hence the efforts made to make peace between the warring parties in the country have failed. Although unlike the Palestinian peace process and the Kashmir issue, Afghan peace process involves domestic parties and is internal in nature, however, when involved, the US too has not been able to play a decisive role in ensuring peace between the government and the Taliban.

Moreover, the incident possibly is the outcome of the US strike in Afghanistan that resulted in the death of Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah.
