Akram said Afridi is hailed as a national hero after the cricket World Cup and West Indies ODI series. He termed the PCB’s action incorrect and blamed chairman Ijaz Butt for the decision.
Akram was not alone in his criticism of the PCB. Former chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said Afridi had committed no crime except speaking about problems he faced as a captain. He also called on the government to intervene in the matter.
As mentioned earlier in a report published in The Express Tribune, PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt refused to share his reasons behind the sacking of Shahid Afridi as the team’s One-Day International (ODI) captain, saying that it was the board’s right to change captain and the decision had been in the best interest of the team.
Ijaz also backed his decision to appoint Test captain Misbahul Haq, 37, as Afridi’s successor, adding that lack of options in the squad forced the move.
