Civil-military coexistence

Letter June 10, 2018
Response to Dr Muhammad Ali Ehsan’s article titled ‘Is the ultimate civilian coup possible in Pakistan?’

RAWALPINDI: This is in response to Dr Muhammad Ali Ehsan’s article titled ‘Is the ultimate civilian coup possible in Pakistan?’ published in this paper on June 7th. Dr Ehsan brilliantly tries to deliver a solution to the ongoing tussle between the civilian and military leadership in Pakistan. That is to coexist without one trying to completely overthrow the other.

Dr Ehsan draws from the context of the country’s history that the shortcomings of the civilian democratic government of Pakistan that majorly cost the country were the reason that brought the military leadership to the forefront. To fill in the gap that the civilian leadership was creating, the establishment had to intervene. As a result, to want total civilian authority is perhaps ignorant as it is no secret that none of the current political parties are able enough to run the country singlehandedly for the betterment of the people of this country.
