'HBO' releases trailer for upcoming documentary on Robin Williams

In the two minute clip released, the comedian talks about his need to do stand-up comedy

An upcoming HBO documentary follows late American comedian Robin Williams through his life and career, until his suicide in 2014.

Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind is largely narrated by Williams himself and includes footage and interviews with his’ friends and family, including Billy Crystal, Eric Idle, Whoopi Goldberg, David Letterman, Steve Martin and Williams’ son Zak. Marina Zenovich directs the film, reported USA Today.

In the two minute clip released, the comedian talks about his need to do stand-up comedy.  "Stand up is survival. For me, that’s jazz. That’s what I have to do. I don’t tell jokes. I just use characters as a vehicle for me," Williams says, along with footage of himself performing his comedy sets at various times throughout his career. Lewis Black marvels at Williams’ unique comedic mastery saying, “Robin was like nothing I'd ever seen.”

The Jumanji stat goes on to acknowledge his fear of abandonment that stemmed from his childhood. "Oh, yeah. It's a primal fear for any child. And it dictates a lot of how you deal with life." He discusses his drug use and admits that he struggled with a fear “sometimes to run away from it all and sometimes to run into it all."

Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind also explores Williams’ family life. The trailer shows his son Zak sitting down for an nterview. “My father didn’t always feel like he was succeeding, but he was the most successful person I know,” he says.


Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind premieres July 16 on HBO.
