Karachi’s water issues

Letter June 09, 2018
Water distribution to the residents of the metropolis is poorly managed

KARACHI: Karachi is a city of around 20 million people but the water distribution to the residents of the metropolis is poorly managed. Many localities are facing an acute water shortage and with the new ruling of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, residents of these localities have to wake up early in the morning, stand in queues and hope that they will be included in the list made by Karachi Water and Sewerage Board officials at the government designated water sites where water tankers will provide them with water. Even in the hot and humid weather during the month of Ramazan, people reach the site soon after sehr time to get their names listed. Some are turned away despite having waited for hours because only a lucky few can find their names on the list that can only accommodate 100 houses.

This procedure has proved to be more cumbersome than giving a few hundred rupees extra to private water tanker providers. While people suffer all that the politicians and departments concerned do is blame one another for this ordeal. Karachi needs immediate and pragmatic solution to water woes and the authorities concerned need to act now and fast.
