Sindhi Language Authority announces best authors in eight genres

Honoured writers include Dr Shazia Safeer, Nasir Zehrani, Adal Soomro and others

HYDERABAD: The Sindhi Language Authority (SLA) has selected eight best authors of 2017 for as many works in different genres of the language. The authors will be awarded at a ceremony to be held later this month.

SLA Spokesperson Saleem Jarwar said on Wednesday that the best authors had been selected by a panel of language and literary experts. In the genre of language and linguistics, Dr Shazia Safeer was selected as the best author for her work A linguistic study of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai's Poetry while Shabnum Gul was selected for the award in the genre of story for book Sorrows of a desolate lap.

However, Gul announced to withdraw herself from the award as she has recently been appointed as the SLA secretary. "When the judges were deciding about the book, I was not the SLA's secretary. But since I have joined the authority, I am withdrawing from the contest," she said in a statement.

For the genre of story, Nasir Zehrani was selected as the best author, whereas Adal Soomro was selected for the award for producing the best book of poetry. For genres of biography, translation, research and children's literature, Abdul Qadir Mangi, Inam Shaikh, Mukhtiar Ahmed Mallah and Yasir Qazi were selected as the best authors respectively.
