ISLAMABAD: More recently, social media platforms have become an important channel for celebrities and known figures to raise their voice over important issues. Where quite a few times, voices raised have been heard, equal is the number of instances when the same has been nothing more than a formality expressing one’s less than concerned opinion on an issue. Case in point, the #JusticeforAsifa campaign that led to the celebratory ‘I am Hindustan and I am ashamed’ placards held by Indian film stars in support of Asifa.
Similarly, campaigns run to urge people to conserve food and water and scarce natural resources have been less than purposeful. Where the importance of raising voice via channels as massively followed as the popular social media sites cannot be denied, it can only be hoped that someday these online campaigns will have the impact equivalent to that of millions taking to the streets and the roads.
