CBFC’s double standards

Veere Di Wedding celebrates female friendship e and humanises women by letting them be in charge of their own agency

KARACHI: The Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan decided to ban Bollywood movie Veere Di Wedding from releasing in cinema houses. The movie was slated to release on June 1st. The decision was based on the pretext that the movie consisted of ‘vulgar content’.

Let’s be clear. Veere Di Wedding starring A-listers celebrates female friendship with four female protagonists steering the movie and ‘humanising’ women by letting them be in charge of their own agency. And the CBFC consisting of an all-men board banning a movie about four female leads is as ironic as it can get.

What the board describes as ‘vulgar content’ has been given a pass without any objection when the same story consists of male leads. We have seen the release of movies such as the Housefull franchise, The Shaukeens and even Pakistan’s very own Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, which can clearly be stated as ‘vulgar’ according to the censor board’s standards. In fact, Pakistani blockbuster movie Na Maloom Afraad was loaded with sexual innuendos and the board cleared the movie without batting an eye.

What makes Veere Di Wedding different then? The female anatomy on the cover is self-explanatory.
