PESHAWAR: The last rites of Sikh community leader and rights activist Charanjit Singh were offered in a traditional ceremony in Attock on Wednesday as condemnations over his murder poured in. Singh was sitting in his store on the outskirts of Peshawar on Tuesday afternoon when a lone gunman barged into his store and shot him before fleeing. On Wednesday, his body was taken to the crematorium in Attock where his last rites were performed.
The inspector general of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Police also took notice of the incident and directed the concerned officials to submit a report within a week. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemned the brutal murder of Sing and demanded that the perpetrators are tried and punished under the law. “We simply cannot afford to cede any more space to wanton violence against religious minorities,” it said. A call was also issued by civil society members to hold a protest against the murder outside the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday.
