KARACHI:

The chief justice has approved in principle a training programme for members of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA). The project would be funded under the Asian Development Bank’s ‘Access to Justice Programme’ or AJP.

Members with a minimum practice of two years would be eligible to attend the ‘Advocacy Training Course’, which was suggested by the KBA, its honorary secretary, Haider Imam Rizvi, informed The Express Tribune.

“I had a meeting with the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry [on Wednesday] to discuss the training programme and other issues relevant to KBA members,” he said.

First master trainers would be hired, and they would train 20 trainers. The trainers would be selected from senior lawyers, retired judges, etc. who are practising in all fields of specialisation.

He said that the chief justice thinks the training would benefit young lawyers and strengthen the judicial system.

This would be the first ever post-education practical training programme initiated by a bar of Pakistan, and the KBA, being the country’s largest bar, was proud to have the project approved. The implementation would start within a few weeks, the KBA honorary secretary added.
