Prevailing heatwave

KARACHI: Heatwaves continue to envelop Pakistan, one of the most affected regions by climate change. This is a challenge that people of Pakistan have to address together. It is not for the government to plan alone. This is a global phenomenon and NGOs and civil society have to unite to take concrete steps to curb these ever-increasing temperatures for the best interest of the country’s population, who are experiencing hot climatic conditions leading to alarming death tolls.

People are also experiencing heat strokes due to dehydration and breathing difficulties which pose severe health-related issues.

It is with deep regret that I note that the government has done little to nothing to control the situation. In fact, the civil society too has not taken any adequate steps thus far.

Nonetheless, people should take precautionary methods to deal with the ongoing season of heatwaves by avoiding unnecessary travel, especially during the peak hours from 1pm to 3pm and ensure to be hydrated throughout the day. People who are fasting in the month of Ramazan should consume seasonal fruits in sehri. But most importantly the government and the civil society should work together to grow more trees, save existing forests and improve greenery throughout the country to combat the threat of climate change.
