Debate over role of institutions

Debate over the role and powers of these institutions has never been allowed

ISLAMABAD: Last week the prime minister spoke of a truth commission that should be formed to inquire into important events since Pakistan’s inception. Now the premier has called for a national debate on civil-military ties in Pakistan and the role of other state institutions in the collective formation of a national discourse. Although the idea has come at the end of the PM’s government, if ever implemented it can bring a positive change in the relationship between the state institutions in Pakistan, where crossing into one another’s boundaries and performing overlapping roles has for long remained a hurdle to the resolution of many important national issues.
Further, debate over the role and powers of these institutions has never been allowed whereas in a democratic setup it is an indisputable right of the citizens.
