Nawaz reiterates demand for across-the-board accountability

Lavishes praise on nominated caretaker prime minister Nasirul Mulk

ISLAMABAD: Erstwhile prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday reiterated the need for a national inquiry commission to ensure across-the-board-accountability.

Sharif made the remarks while talking to reporters at an Islamabad accountability court. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo said the commission ought to comprise of judges, military men, lawmakers and other notables.



Commenting on the brouhaha surrounding the recent publication of former ISI chief Asad Durrani's  The Spy Chronicles, the former prime minister said action against one man would prove futile. Accountability cannot be selective, he said. The former PM then rued about the 'disastrous' impact of former president Pervez Musharraf and former military man Shahid Khan's books.

Sharif also said the proposed commission would determine who was entitled to security. "If anything untoward happens, who is to blame," he said.



Commenting on the recent naming of Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk as  caretaker premier, Sharif lavished praise on the 'English' judge. Terming Mulk an "outstanding" chief justice, the former prime minister said he had done great service to the nation.

Queried on comments pertaining to the appointment of Justice Asif Saeed Khosa's younger brother Nasir as interim Punjab chief minister, Sharif said Nasir was a brilliant man. "It doesn't matter if his name was presented by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. A man of good character makes a great candidate."
