CAS gets Muslim academician

Rehman is the first scientist from the Muslin world to be awarded this honour

LAHORE: Professor Attaur Rehman was inducted as the first- ever Muslim academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on Monday. This was announced during the 19th general assembly of CAS and the 14th general assembly of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, which was presided over by the Chinese President Xi Jinping. Paul Nurse, a Nobel laureate and former president of The Royal Society, was also inducted as an academician during the ceremony. Rehman is the first scientist from the Muslin world to be awarded this honour. He has a PhD in organic chemistry from Cambridge University, and has 1,122 publications under his belt including 764 research publications, 43 international patents and 245 books. He was also the federal minister for science and technology (2000-2002), the federal minister for education (2002), and the chairman of the Higher Education Commission with the status of a federal minister (2002-2008).
