ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court has given the government three weeks to reconstitute the Election Commission.

On Thursday, the court observed that it will make sure all state organs function under the constitution.

Counsels for some MPAs sought time to discuss the matter with the Prime Minister and Opposition leader in the National Assembly.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry has taken strict notice of what he calls a “serious constitutional violation”. He said the by-elections were not held by the commission, but the Election Commissioner, which is un-constitutional. He urged the Attorney General to look into the matter.

The Chief Justice also said the government is heading towards a serious crisis if this act is not rectified.
