Unfit for power

PTI seem unfit for any coherent decisions

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has announced its human rights policy just four days before it will be dissolved, in the wake of the upcoming general elections. While the human rights policy doesn’t lay out anything exemplary as it would be touching upon issues that have mostly been covered in different legislations already, the need for the government to announce an important policy for the province towards the end of its tenure is in poor taste.

It is no secret that human rights violations are prevalent in K-P, especially when considered the treatment meted out to the transgender community living in the province. By announcing a policy with just four days left in power, irrespective of the fact that whether it holds significant measures or not, leaves no room for its implementation. Ideally, policies are announced within days of a government assuming power leaving enough time to them for its implementation. But failing to do that only reflects poorly on the PTI government in power.

The ruling party either assumes that it will definitely win in the province in the upcoming general elections — an ambitious assumption — or it is only trying to impress its vote bank by passing a human rights policy even if it meant doing so at the eleventh hour. Either way, doing so only makes the PTI seem unfit for any coherent decisions.
