Fake Degrees: PM amongst lawmakers yet to submit degrees

More than 65 out of 1,170 educational certificates of parliamentarians were found to be dubious or fake.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani figures prominently among some 230 parliamentarians who have yet to submit their matriculation and intermediate certificates to the Election Commission (EC) for verification, an official informed the Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedures.

“More than 65 out of 1,170 educational certificates of parliamentarians were (found to be) dubious or fake,” Secretary ECP Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan informed the committee. “The ECP only deals with the lawmakers’ bachelors’ degrees,” he said. The Higher Education Commission cannot proceed with the verification of the degrees of 543 parliamentarians unless they submit their Secondary School and Higher Secondary School Certificates.

Legislators who have yet to submit their educational credentials include federal ministers Pervez Elahi, Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Chaudhary Wajahat Hussain, Firdous Ashiq Awan and Farzana Raja among others.

I guess it's too much to ask that a Pakistani General would understand that democracy is supposed to be 'for the people, BY the people'? Considering the illiteracy rate of our country, there is absolutely no reason why the small educated minority should be allowed to represent the uneducated majority. Let the PEOPLE choose who they want as their representatives. If the person happens to have a PhD, that's great. If he sells gol gappay in liberty, that's just great too!

Naila | 13 years ago | Reply A month or two back I saw a ticker running on one of the local news channels which said PM Gilani told a group of journalists that he had a PhD in Journalism from a Turkish University. I was appalled by the audacity and absurdity of Gilani's declaration. But then, maybe he was conferred an honorary PhD because of the sensational lies and news, he and the PPP government have managed to spin for years. :) What surprises me even more is that not a single journalist confronted him for clarification!!

The than Election Commissioner should be behind bars for accepting fake documents at the first place. What is the point of asking the degrees now when candidates have already been elected and in Govt.

faraz murad | 13 years ago | Reply the govt has already spent its time,they've looted whateve they wanted to loot.All these cases will be decided when new elections will be on our head & even then nothing will be done as the ppp has repeatedly shown that if you try to stop their corruption they'll play the 'sindh card' & promote ethnic hate towards punjabis. we've seen this racist behaviour of the ppp over the last 2 years & they just want to loot & plunder,they don't care if they destroy pakistan in the process.

Just look at how these two present themselves in public and you should realize that they most likely have no degrees and I am personally surprised that both of them made it past the rigors and challenges of their teenage years. lol, perfect picture though.
