The railways has a deficit of Rs65 billion. The decision was made to stop 26 trains countrywide including southern Punjab.
Pakistan Railways is facing large and complex problems as a huge deficit has been compounded by an inability to raise revenue. This has put down to a lack of locomotives to pull the trains with loaded freight wagons often having to wait nearly a month to be moved.
Plans were announced in April to begin closing lines. Among the lines affected by this new announcement are Pakpatan Lahore, Rawalpindi and Kohat.
Pakistan Railways said that the routes marked for closure were only generating 15 per cent of the cost required to run them.
