He was responding to a question regarding the recent emergence of dissenting voices from within the party against Nawaz Sharif’s policy lines- adopted after the July 28 SC decision disqualifying Nawaz Sharif from holding elected office.
He said that to his knowledge many of the members at a parliamentary meeting presided over by Party President Shehbaz Sharif have shown complete support with the party and with party’s supreme leader Nawaz Sharif. He said that there were only some who had objections to party policy. He said that PML-N is a political party in which members are allowed to have differences of opinion.
He said that come what may, the policy given by Nawaz Sharif continues to be the policy of the party. He rejected the impression of any differences between Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif. He said that Shehbaz Sharif is the president of the party but he also stands behind Nawaz Sharif’s leadership.
Sharif brothers meet at Jati Umra
Another senior leader of the party from the Nawaz camp said that Shehbaz, as the Chief Minister of Punjab, cannot openly back Nawaz. “He has to take several things into account including his chances of becoming prime minister before giving any statement.”
Otherwise, he said, if not for that, his denial of the presence of alien influence in Pakistani politics would have been very different. He said that we all know how things are moved in Pakistani politics. He said it was no secret that Shehbaz has always had differences of opinion with Nawaz on various issues, but those difference never translated into disobedience.
Efforts afoot to reconcile Sharif brothers
He said there is only one leader in the party and that is Nawaz Sharif. He said that his fight is not just for his government, but for the supremacy of democracy. He said that it was high time to decide who the ultimate policymaker in the country was and that recent defections have proven the involvement of alien forces in our political arena.
“When parliamentarians are told to quit the party, they will use anything as an excuse to abandon the party,” he said, while also alluding to a recent incident where an MNA from FATA parted ways with the PML-N due to a flight delay.
