From bad to worse: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's looks from Cannes 2018
Actor's red carpet looks were boring and frankly, forgettable
KARACHI:
This year's Cannes Film Festival has seen some of the boldest looks yet. From Deepika Padukone's ruffled Ashi Studio gown to Kangana Ranaut's figure-hugging Nedrett Taciroglu jumpsuit, the starlets have dressed to impress.
However, every year, there's one undisputed queen on the red carpet that I, for one, eagerly wait to watch. And she is none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Ash's red carpet looks are sure to make headlines globally in one way or another; be it when she donned the purple lipstick at Cannes 2016 or Micheal Cinco's Cinderella-inspired gown last year.
The best and worst of Aishwarya at Cannes red carpet
So, I was quite impatient to see her walk at the film fest this year (and Mahira Khan, of course!). But, much to my disappointment she failed to leave a mark.
The Jazbaa star's looks from this year were nothing but basic (with a lot of repetitions) that quickly escalated from bad to worse. Let's go dress by dress, shall we?
1. Ice blue Rami Kadi gown:
Out of all her red carpet looks, this was the most decent one. The actor donned a floor-length strapless gown with a long trail on her final day at the festival. Ash paired her outfit with a Cleopatra bun (which again was a big no no!), minimal jewellery and makeup.
The dress itself wasn't so outrageous. While it lacked the oomph factor, she did play safe with her sartorial choice on the occasion. But, it could have worked better with dramatic hair (case in point: Aishwarya's Eli Saab rose gold look from Cannes 2016).
2. Pastel blue Manish Arora creation:
Basic. That's what came to my mind when I saw Aishwarya's first look at Cannes 2018. The actor opted for a heavily embellished Manish Arora dress in pastel hues. But sadly, instead of the dress, it was Ash's makeup and hair that grabbed all the attention.
Face wise, she looked gorgeous in soft makeup and wavy locks. However, the dress failed to add anything to her look.
3. The purple mermaid Micheal Cinco gown:
On her first appearance on the red carpet, Ash donned a bright purple Micheal Cinco gown. Well, you might know Cinco from the pale blue fairytale dress she wore at Cannes last year.
While her 2017 look ticked all the right boxes on our fashion checklist, this year's look however, ticked all the wrong ones.
The gown was created to reflect the impalpable dream of a butterfly metamorphosis, Cinco told Harper Bazaar.
Ash's make up was sloppy and a bit too bright, when it should've been soft in contrast to the extremely vibrant dress. It felt like neither the dress nor the makeup did justice to the former Miss World.
The elaborate number took 3,000 hours to make, Cinco revealed.
Ash's red carpet offerings on a whole, lacked one thing or another. Since she opted for a lot of repetitions this year, in terms of designers and styling, all the looks were boring, and frankly, forgettable.
