Are we living up to the demands of fasting?

Letter May 11, 2018
The purpose of fasting is to develop Taqwa. But do we match up to the demands of fasting?

KARACHI: Fasting is to refrain from sinful deeds and train oneself to control one’s wishes and thoughts. The purpose of fasting is to develop Taqwa. But do we match up to the demands of fasting? Are we going on the same track that is prescribed by our God? We lay on the bed all day while fasting and don’t even offer prayers and recite Quran that we are supposed to do. We believe we should be doing nothing while the true enjoyment lies in the experience of fasting while doing our routine work.

On top of that, we witness a lot of people who appear frustrated and angry at all times. But the purpose of fasting is to develop self-control and avoid getting into conflicts.
