US pulls out of Iran deal

Letter May 10, 2018
The reversal is a major blow to years of diplomatic efforts by the Obama administration

LAHORE: After some deliberations, at last US President Donald Trump has pulled his country out of “The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” or the Iran nuclear agreement, initiated to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The reversal is a major blow to years of diplomatic efforts by the Obama administration. Contrary to Trump’s belief and opinion, the deal not only curbed Iran’s uranium enrichment for nuclear activity but also drastically reduced its nuclear reactors from 19,000 to 6,500. It also ensured that all the nuclear enrichment at various sites would only serve civilian purpose like power production or other industrial usage.

Where Iran still vows to remain committed to the deal it is hoped that other European parties to the deal would do their best to keep it intact even if the US has pulled out. Although many still regard the deal as pointless given its period of validity spread over a span of almost a decade, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action still managed to avert the nuclear threat, if there was any in the first place, at least for a few years.
