Faulty traffic signals causing fatal crashes
Citizens demand govt start urgent repairs of traffic lights
KHUSHAB:
During the last few months, fatal car accidents have seen an alarming increase in Khushab, most of them because traffic signals were not working.
Signal posts on main intersections stand uselessly in the middle of bustling roads; their red, yellow and green lights either malfunctioning or dead. However, the most affected area is Khatta Chowk where accidents have become common owing to the malfunctioning of millions of rupees worth traffic signals. The Khatta Chowk is the busiest area of the city from where vehicles abound for the entire country pass by.
A survey of the place by Express News revealed that in view of the increasing accidents, traffic signals were installed at Khatta Chowk some time back.
Citizens urge authorities to repair faulty traffic lights
However, due to the negligence of the departments concerned, these signals have been malfunctioning since long time and accidents had, therefore, becoming a common occurrence.
Many precious lives have been lost as motorcycles and rickshaws collide with fast moving passenger buses, trucks, wagons and cars that pass by the chowk.
Locals brought the issue to the attention of the district administration several times, but the faulty traffic signals have not been repaired. Not only have the hundreds of thousands of rupees, spent by the national treasury on the traffic signals, gone to waste, but precious lives are being lost due to the indifference of authorities concerned.
While speaking to Express News, various political and social personalities of the city, including Riffat Khan Baloch, Haji Zahid Nadeem, Muzzamil Khan and others, demanded authorities repair the traffic signals installed at Khatta Chowk to protect citizens from road accidents.
