The initial investigation had revealed that the Chinese national, Chen Zhu was killed on February 4 over a business dispute – the murder was planned by a disgruntled shareholder who was dismissed for corruption.

Chen was working at a non-China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) related private shipping firm in Karachi. He and another Chinese national, Ye Fan, had left office for lunch at a restaurant in Block 2 Clifton, after which they moved towards Neelam Colony opposite Zamzama Park for grocery shopping when assailants opened fire, killing 46-year-old.
