ISLAMABAD: Institute of Maritime Affairs (IMA) has announced a one-day International Maritime Symposium to be held tomorrow (Monday), according to a press release from Pakistan Navy.

The symposium will assess the “Impact of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on the geo-economics of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), prospects for Pakistan, the region and beyond”, says the press release.

Reputed national and international speakers would participate in the event, it says, adding that the conference will be highly significant due to the current shift of global power from West to East and rapidly changing economic and political dynamics.

Experts believe that the BRI, coupled with interests of regional or extra regional actors, is the major factor affecting the future of IOR.

In addition to that, the aim of the conference is to understand the emerging trends in the region and potential implications of BRI at national and regional levels, reads the PN release. The focus of discussion would be mainly on geo-economics in the backdrop of geo-political and strategic issues, including security aspects.

The symposium would not only bring out the economic and security prospects of the BRI for Pakistan but also serve as a national platform to enhance the maritime awareness, particularly about the emerging trends in IOR, it says.
