MULTAN: Senior politician Javed Hashmi has claimed that the Pakistan People Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari sought help from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif to counter influence of Makhdoom Amin Fahim.

Fahim, who ran the PPP during the party’s top leaders’ self-exile during Musharraf’s regime, was later sidelined after the PPP formed government in 2008 in the wake of the PPP chief Benazir Bhutto’s assassination

“Zardari begged Sharif to help counter Amin Fahim who had taken over the PPP as its acting chairperson soon after the death of [the PPP slain chief] Mohterma Benazir Bhutto.

“Zardari also sought help from Sharif to save his party from the reach of [another PPP stalwart] Raza Rabbani,” Hashmi said on Friday while addressing a press conference at Multan Press Club. “At least a PhD in politics is required to understand politics of Asif Ali Zardari,” he added.

Hashmi, who also led the ruling PML-N during Nawaz Sharif’s exile to Saudi Arabia, also criticized the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which he said is a biased organization, which has failed to unearth corruption from the ten years rule of Pervez Musharraf.

“The ultimate objective of NAB is to establish that the politicians and politics are dirty. NAB’s sun is shining over only two cases but it has failed to unveil all corruption done in Musharraf’s rule.”

He asked if Musharraf’s rule was corruption free. “At least half of the country’s wealth looted during his rule can be recovered from Musharraf alone. NAB has introduced plea bargain in many cases and has let culprits go scot free just by returning 30% of the looted money,” he added.

Hashmi appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to ensure accountability of judges. He said the accountability system is more artificial than practicable. He said the SC removed Nawaz Sharif on Iqama [work permit] but more than half of the country population is living on Iqama across the country.

Won’t even go to paradise with Nawaz, says Zardari

He said the United States was preparing specialised forces to attack Pakistan while Pakistan did not respond to US when it took down Osama Bin Laden. “The army should perform its professional job instead of indulging in politics,” he said.

Javed Hashmi said Sharif has offered him party ticket in the next general elections but he has not yet decided rejoining the PML-N.

Suleman Sumra | 5 years ago | Reply It is sad to see comments that Hashmi is making. Sidelined by all political parties he says things that have no logic. He was a great leader, but now he is a shadow of his former self. Really sad.
