This is how the country fares on media freedom indices

On World Press Freedom Day, a snapshot on the situation in Pakistan based on the country’s ranking on different media freedom indices:

Press Freedom Index 2018

The Press Freedom Index reflects the degree of freedom that journalists, news organisations and netizens enjoy, with particular regard to journalistic safety. The countries are ranked according to an overall country score ranging from 0 to 100, with 0 being the best possible score and 100 being the worst. Based on the score, Reporters Without Borders attributes a category: “Good Situation”, “Satisfactory Situation”, “Noticeable Problems”, “Difficult Situation” or “Very Serious Situation”.

Freedom of the Press Index 2017

The Freedom of the Press Index is based on a scale from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the worse the situation regarding media freedom. Freedom House assesses the legal (laws and regulations) and political environment (e.g., political control over news media) as well as the economic environment (e.g., ownership concentration). The US-based watchdog organisation groups the countries into the categories of “Free” (overall country score between 0 and 30), “Partly Free” (31-60) and “Not Free” (61-100).

Freedom on the Net Index 2017

The Freedom on the Net Index is based on a scale from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the worse the situation regarding online freedoms. With regard to the Internet, Freedom House assesses obstacles to access, limits on content, and violation of user rights. The US-based watchdog organisation groups the countries into the categories of “Free” (overall country score between 0 and 30), “Partly Free” (31-60) and “Not Free” (61-100).
