Unscheduled load-shedding in Karachi

Letter April 30, 2018
Amidst their own dispute, SSGC and K-Electric have left citizens to wait on third-party intervention

KARACHI: Hours spent without electricity has become a part of everyday life of a Karachiite, but the worst is the unannounced and unscheduled power shutdown.

Amidst their own dispute, Sui Southern Gas Company and K-Electric have left citizens to wait on third-party intervention that would resolve the issue between the two. Yet, even that will not suffice. It’s only this time around that the power supply crisis has been blamed on the two aforementioned entities, whereas factually, the issue is as old as Pakistan’s inception. Now that the water level in the dams and reservoirs has dropped to alarmingly low levels, it would be futile to expect the government to resolve the issue.

During the dark hours of the night, where most people cannot sleep properly, students’ learning ability deteriorates drastically. Dark streets become even more unsafe. The menace of load-shedding has become an epidemic, which has gone out of the control of the government.
