Daughters are a blessing

Daughters are a great blessing from God. They should be empowered and entitled to their due share of rights

KARACHI: Humankind is a blessed creation of Almighty God, who is kind and merciful. Human nature too, being his creation, should extend the same virtues of kindness and compassion towards his creation. When the Almighty and his Prophet (pbuh) have loved daughters, regarding their birth as an expression of divine mercy, then who are we to kill them in the womb or right after their birth?

Truly, it’s the lowest that the mankind has stooped down to. A practice regarded as that of the period of darkness, before the advent of Islam, is still prevalent in today’s society.

In my personal opinion, there can be many reasons for such a despicable attitude towards daughters. The custom of dowry at the time of marriage is a burden for the less privileged and besides that women’s entitlement to a share from the inheritance is another major reason that results in girls being married off to their child male cousins. Above all, daughters for long have been thought to be a burden, not equivalent to the sons in a family. Where women are making great strides in all spheres of life, such a mindset still prevails in many middle-class families. It is about time that it changed.

Daughters are a great blessing from God. They should be empowered and entitled to their due share of rights.
