ISLAMABAD: In what can be termed a fresh setback for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, three of its MPAs joined the ranks of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Thursday.

The MPAs, namely Zahid Durrani, Ubaidullah Mayar and Nagina Khan met the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari at Bilawal House, Lahore to formally announce the joining.

The former president welcomed the new entrants, claiming the people of K-P have always supported PPP and likewise, the party has served them.

He highlighted that the people of the province had suffered the most from extremism and terrorism, and rendered sacrifices. Zardari reiterated that the PPP wanted Fata's merger with K-P. He asked the MPAs to strengthen the party's chairman Bilawal Bhutto.

JI set to quit K-P coalition govt

President PPP K-P Humayun Khan, senators Sardar Ali Khan, Khanzada Khan, Behramand Tangi, Nighat Orakzai, MPA Ziaullah Afridi, Amir Fida Paracha and Hidayatullah Khan were present during the meeting.

On Wednesday, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) provincial chief Mushtaq Ahmed Khan announced at a press briefing that the party will quit the ruling alliance.

Sources in the party said differences emerged between the JI and the PTI in the wake of the Bank of Khyber scandal in which the bank published an advertisement against Muzaffar Said of the JI.

Last week, JI chief Sirajul had accused the PTI of taking dictation from the establishment during last month’s election for the Senate top slots. The PTI spokesperson had rejected the claim and accused Haq of playing in the hands of the ruling party.
