Political and armed forces now share same perspective on upholding democracy: Maleeha Lodhi

Ambassador says, this will be the second term in which government is handed over to elected officials

NEW YORK: Pakistan's permanent ambassador to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi remarked that there is complete agreement on the political and armed front for the promotion of democracy in Pakistan.

Speaking to a delegation from the United States War College the ambassador highlighted that Pakistan has been selected as a member of the United Nations Security Council seven times and a member of the United Nations Human Rights Commission four times.

Lodhi pointed out that this is the second term in which the government will be handed over to the next elected representatives. She emphasised that the civil and armed forces are in complete accord for upholding the will of the people.

Furthermore, Lodhi talked about Pakistan's perseverance in the fight against terrorism. She stated that the country has weeded out all terrorist operatives.

"Two million troops fought valiantly in an operation to abolish terrorism which curbed terrorist attacks in Pakistan by 60 per cent incidence after the year 2010, she said.

While this does not mean that challenges do not exist, it does show our improved capabilities and command.

She stressed that Pakistan's economy has been driven out of challenges and has now entered a new era of a prosperity.

The ambassador stressed that Pakistan wishes for peace and stability in its neighboring states. Restoring peace and security in Afghanistan is a top priority in Pakistan's foreign policy.

Lodhi said that Pakistan is willing to resolve conflicts and establish strong relations with India to steer the peace process.
