PONTE VEDRA BEACH: David Toms seized a one-shot lead at the halfway point of The Players Championship, but defending champion Tim Clark was forced to pull out with an elbow injury.

Toms fired a four-under 68 to take a one shot lead over Nick Watney (71) with four others just a stroke back in a tie for third. “I haven’t done anything great, haven’t made a lot of long putts or chip in or anything like that,” said Toms. “I’ve just played very, very solid.”

US Open champion Graeme McDowell, of Northern Ireland, shot a two-under 69 and was tied at eight-under 136 with England’s Luke Donald (67), and a pair of Americans Steve Stricker (67) and Lucas Glover (71).
