Historic verdict

Letter April 16, 2018
Only time will tell whether the verdict will hamper democratic setup

ISLAMABAD: The verdict given by the Supreme Court on April 13th that disqualified Nawaz Sharif and rendered him ineligible from holding a public office for life has garnered much debate since its release. While some are for the verdict, calling it a historic ruling, others fear that this verdict can destroy the democratic setup of the country as it permits the judicialisation of politics.

However, only time will tell whether the verdict will hamper the democratic setup of the country but one thing is for sure that this historic verdict will pave the way for better, honest and credible politicians to enter the political foyer of the parliament. Pakistan’s politics will hopefully no longer be marred with corruption and dynastic/hereditary politics. People who genuinely want to serve the country for its betterment will be able to work towards it.

Purely in that sense, this verdict should be upheld by everyone.
