'Terrorists eliminated from South Waziristan'

PESHAWAR: Corps Commander Peshawar Yaseen Malik on Saturday said that  terrorists had been eliminated from South Waziristan and the reconstruction process was the main focus now.

The Corps Commander was visiting Chagmalai area in the agency on completion of the second phase of repatriation of internally displaced people.

Addressing a jirga of tribal elders, the Malik said projects including an educational complex, a sports stadium, post offices and petrol pumps were in the works.

He inspected several projects which were completed in the area and expressed satisfaction over their conclusion in a short period of time.

He also distributed keys to newly built shops in Chagmalai Bazar amongst local tribesmen.

The United States carries out frequent drone strikes targeting militants in the South and North Waziristan agencies.

R S JOHAR | 13 years ago | Reply In tactical terms SW operation was absolutely flawed since in any counter-insurgency operation the militants are first encircled un-announced to achieve surprise and their escape routed are sealed but during this operation they were allowed to escape unhindered to the safe havens of NW and Afghanistan. For complete success of such operations it is extremely important to kill militant's leaders and eliminate them in large numbers but unfortunately neither of the two was achieved by the military. With their ninety percent infrastructure still intact, Taleban have mounted a number of attacks at regular intervals therefore claim of their elimination is far from reality.
