Abolishing FCR

Letter April 15, 2018
Law that bars the locals from filing an appeal against a verdict and their right to legal representation

LAHORE: After mulling on Fata reforms for over three years, the Senate has finally extended the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and the Peshawar High Court to the region.

However, the bill was opposed by the JUI-F and the PkMAP, despite much criticism and questioning of the current judicial and legal structure of Fata.

The legislative houses must now work towards the implementation of Fata reforms package, which also includes the scrapping of the infamous Frontier Crime Regulations (FCR) law that bars the locals from filing an appeal against a verdict and their right to legal representation. Only with the termination of the FCR law, the law of extension of the jurisdiction of the courts will be implemented in its essence.
