The court was hearing the case on 103 petitions, including those from the farmers. The petitioners had named the Punjab government, cane commissioner and mill owners as respondents in the case.
Justice Ayesha A Malik of the LHC directed Brothers Sugar Mills, reportedly owned by the Sharif family’s relatives, and Patoki and Darya Khan mills to pay up the dues to the farmers.
The court also ordered that the Rs350 million recovered from Brothers Sugar Mills be distributed among the farmers.
Earlier, the counsels for the banks apprised the court that they had given loan to the sugar mill owners in exchange for the sugar as surety, but the latter did not return the due amount and sold the sugar instead.
