Punjab Food Authority has taken an admirable step as it has decided to ban Styrofoam

KARACHI: The Punjab Food Authority has taken an admirable step as it has decided to ban Styrofoam and other commonly used food packaging material after these were found to be unsafe in the findings of a scientific panel. The decision will be implemented under the Packaging Material Regulation 2018.

Unsafe for human consumption packaging material has been found as the major cause of many hazardous diseases and is harmful to human health. However, food packed in these materials or wrapped in newspapers is commonly sold across the country particularly at street food stalls in relatively poorer settlements.

Legislative assemblies of other provinces too should implement the same legislation and take strict action against food outlets that use such food packaging material. Not only are they injurious to human health but they also affect the environment we live in, giving way to climate change that has time and again been proven to have grave implications for our wellbeing.
