Bollywood’s hypocrisy

Letter April 10, 2018
An outcome many in the country were expecting anyway, owing to Salman’s influence

RAWALPINDI: Last week, Bollywood actor Salman Khan was convicted by a Jodhpur court in India and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Blackbuck poaching case that began 20 years ago. However, as expected he has been granted bail. An outcome many in the country were expecting anyway, owing to Salman’s influence.

Cases that Salman has been involved in over the years and there being no substantial outcomes, only goes on to prove that the judicial system of many countries favours the rich and powerful. What’s worse is the hypocrisy of the Bollywood industry, as many celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor who have many a times advocated for animal rights, chose to side with Salman instead of holding up the verdict as a victory for animal rights.

The fact that celebrities choose to advocate for rights of a particular segment according to their convenience not only damages their credibility but also adversely influences the public as they are looked upon as idols.
