Hinge Laminoplasty: ATH surgeons remove spinal tumour from young girl

Neurosurgery department will be conducting more such procedures in future

ABBOTTABAD: Surgeons at the Ayub Teaching Hospital in Abbottabad have helped an eight-year-old girl by removing a tumour on her spine.

Four days ago, eight-year-old Kainat from the Khuna village in Mansehra was admitted to the hospital. She had been diagnosed with a tumour on her spine which required surgery to be removed.

Ayub Teaching Hospital Neuro Surgeon Dr Ehtisham Khan Afridi, an assistant professor, along with the head of the department and senior professor Dr Ahsan Aurangzeb and Dr Abdul Aziz Khan removed a spinal tumour using Hinge Laminoplasty in a two-and-a-half-hour procedure conducted by a team of eight doctors including technicians and anaesthesia specialists.

They removed the tumour without disturbing the bones of the patient.

The hospital’s management said that the neurosurgery department will be conducting more such procedures in the future which will be conducted free of cost.
