Quetta traffic police understaffed

Only 304 traffic police officers controlling traffic of a city with 3m population

QUETTA: There are a total of only 304 traffic police officers controlling the traffic flow in Quetta, which has a population of nearly three million.

They are compelled to work in two shifts, day and night, while the out-of-order traffic signals are causing severe traffic jams. The traffic police force is controlling millions of cars, rickshaws, motorcycles and various other vehicles.



Sources say complaints have been made several times and a summary sent by senior traffic police officers in different departments of the province proved fruitless.

Sources say keeping in view the increasing traffic in the city, the number of traffic police officers is quite less.

The first shift starts at 7:30 in the morning and the second at 2:00 and ends at 8:30pm. Due to the inadequate number of traffic police force, problems are arising in controlling the traffic flow.

Public representatives have also demanded an increase in the number of traffic police force.



Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Traffic Muhammad Javed said, “On the directions of the chief minister, SSP traffic and Balochistan inspector general of police have banned the entry of cars, motorcycles and rickshaws on Abdul Sattar Road providing relief to the shoppers, while the shopkeepers and the citizens have appreciated the step.”

The same measure is being implemented in other areas of the city in which traffic police is trying its level best, while citizens and shopkeepers have hailed this step and said that they finally got relief from the traffic jams and rush.
